Gefen DVI to HDMI cables are non-directional, so they work equally well in both DVI to HDMI and HDMI to DVI conversion applications.  You should be aware, however, that since the DVI specification does not support digital audio, no cable or passive adapter can send HDMI audio via DVI.

HDMI Benefits

HDMI is similar to DVI in some respects, but the HDMI interface uses a smaller connector than DVI, which makes the cables easier to route through cable management systems, conduits, or through holes in building materials.  The specification handles high-bandwidth, uncompressed video, as well as multi-channel digital audio, all with one cable.  HDMI encoding and decoding hardware is more robust than the hardware used for DVI, so the signal can stand up to longer runs, wall plates, adapters, and so on, better than DVI.  All HDMI-enabled equipment is backward compatible with DVI by using simple passive adapters or adapter cables.

Review From The Real World

When comparing digital cables, it can be very difficult to make an intelligent buying decision. Some cables that look very good actually work very badly.  Some cables look less impressive, but work flawlessly.  There is some truth to the old idea that you get what you pay for.  For example, if you see a 30 foot DVI/HDMI cable for under $50.00, you would have to expect some compromises in materials, workmanship, and ultimately, in performance.  At the same time, higher price does not necessarily equate to higher performance.  It is difficult to compare pricing directly because Monster does not offer any DVI / HDMI conversion cable over 6 meters in length, but for the purposes of price comparison, consider the 25 foot Monster M Series HDMI cable, model M1000 HD-25 - it works well, but it also sells for $350.00.  By comparison, the 25 foot Gefen HDMI cable lists for $179.00 and it also works very well.  In fact, a number of our customers who have reported problems with their Monster cables, have solved those problems by switching to Gefen cables.  As I mentioned, Monster does not offer any DVI / HDMI conversion cables over 6 meters in length whereas Gefen is confident enough to guarantee performance at over 15 meters.

You may have read references to exotic-sounding materials, like "Nitrogen gas injected dielectric" and "Silver-plated pure copper".  You may also notice that some manufacturers make use of gold plating for connector shells.  As it turns out, Gefen DVI to HDMI cables also use a gas-injected dielectric material.  While it is true that silver is a slightly better conductor than copper at DC, the difference becomes insignificant in this application.  Gold is actually somewhat less conductive than copper, so solid gold conductors are not desirable.  Gold plating on connector shells neither helps nor hurts performance, so it falls into the category of cosmetic appeal.  On the other hand, gold does have at least one desirable characteristic as it relates to cable engineering - it is highly resistant to oxidation.  That is why Gefen uses gold-plating at all connector contact points.
