Belden 1808A / Canare LV-61S S-Video Breakout Cable Setup
The 9 meter setup pictured here includes (2) half-meter Belden 1808A S-Video/BNC breakout cables, and a pair of matching 8 meter Canare LV-61S BNC/BNC extension cables, but keep in mind that you may customize the lengths below.
This is a custom made, S-Video Break-out Cable Set. The break-out ends are built with
Belden's best 1808A "BRILLIANCE"
S-Video cable and the Y/C extension cables are built with Canare's most popular video cable, LV-61S.
Here is an upgrade for your system that will be hard to miss -- from the professional look and feel of the cables themselves, to the superior quality of the video that they provide. Perfect for VCR, satellite, cable box, TV monitor and many other home theater and A/V system hook-ups!
The S-Video format, sometimes referred to as Super VHS, S-VHS, or "Y/C" requires two coaxial cables to allow for separate transmission of the two parts of a video signal; the luminance (Y) and chrominance (C). The chrominance signal contains the color information and the luminance signal carries the black and white or brightness information of the video signal. This separated transmission of the video signal provides better picture resolution with less noise.
The S-Video format works well with short cable runs, but longer runs reveal a paradox: The Mini-DIN connector used for S-Video connections is physically small. Small cables have more loss than larger ones of the same type and quality. Large cables won't fit into the mini-DIN plug. So what do you do if you need an S-Video run that exceeds the capabilities of the largest cable that will fit into the connector?
One approach is to use a very good cable, but there are limits to what can be accomplished by using improved materials and design. There are very few S-Video cables that are significantly better than Belden 1808A, which is what we use for our one-piece S-Video assemblies. Even expensive esoteric cables have a hard time doing a better job. It is possible to make very long runs by using a line driver or amplifier to send a stronger signal down the small cable. This is a good choice in some cases, but with any active device, there is always the challenge of avoiding the introduction of additional noise or signal degradation.
It's hard to argue with physics, so the approach we prefer is to simply increase the size of the cable. We build short, half-meter Belden 1808A S-Video-to-BNC break-out cables for each end of the run, then use a pair of larger, high-performance Canare LV-61S BNC-to-BNC cables for the greatest portion of the run. We use super high-quality Canare male BNC crimp connectors on the LV-61S, and female BNC crimp connectors on the S-Video breakout, so no adaptors are required. All of the connectors that we use are impedance-matched, so losses at the connectors are very low.
The break-out approach is elegant in its simplicity. There are no moving parts, no electronic components, and thus, no chance of introducing undesirable video artifacts as a result of those electronics. It is less expensive than a good line driver or amplifier, and its lifespan is indefinite.
Now you can make those long S-Video runs without concern about picture degradation. We have customers using this same setup at 100 meters (330 feet) with excellent results.
